Recently, while browsing the popular poverty finance forum, I came across a post asking for a job with very cheap housing. So, here are the most popular job opportunities with housing.

1. National parks and other resort areas

“You can work in a national park (or other resort areas) for about $16 an hour and get very cheap accommodation in the park for about $50 a week (last time I talked to them, it might be more now).” shared one.

“They are in a shared cabin with a roommate and have a dorm. It’s not a very glamorous job, but it can benefit people who need a job and a place to live and enjoy nature.”

2. Property manager on site

“In California, any multi-unit complex with more than 16 apartments requires a local manager. Companies that own a lot of properties are hiring people to live on site as an acting manager,” replied another.

“Our 2 and 2 bedroom condo in Southern California is waterfront and available for $3,000 if we pay full price. But instead my wife and I pay $400 a month including all utilities – gas/electricity, water, garbage and internet! And this is my side job, which really only eats up four or five hours a month.”

3. Join a working group

One person agreed: “100%, I am a recent employment service graduate (2017) and this was one of the best things I could do. It’s easy to get lost in drama, relationships, ego, hubris, etc., but if you keep your head down and focus, you’ll be golden.”

“My adopted son joined the employment service and it was the best thing he has ever done for himself (so far),” replied another. “They helped him get his high school diploma and then taught him the craft. So yes, some people at Job Corps are not very good, but the program itself is what you make of it.”

4. Oilfields, pipe-laying companies and rope works.

“The oilfield is hiring right now and many of the positions include housing and per diems. I know this will probably be voted oblivious, but I thought I’d throw it out,” one said.

“Most housing construction jobs are done either on drilling rigs or at spool, wire and pipe companies. So heavy equipment experience is useful and even better if you have or want to get a commercial driver’s license (CDL).”

5. College Housing Operations

“I work in Higher Education Housing – not a big salary, but free housing. I have a very nice two-bedroom apartment, but now I work at a school in an area with a low cost of living, ”admitted another.

“Two bedrooms cost about $800 from what I see on Apartments.com in my city. But when I was in graduate school and had the same job, I had a nice one-room apartment in South Florida, so it depended on the area. I love my job, but it’s not for everyone!”

6. Long term housekeeper

“I lived for free for about a year as a nanny, mainly doing long-term care for retirees who traveled a lot or had second homes in other states,” said another.

“Sometimes I have short breaks between chores and need to stay with my family or pay for Airbnb for a few days here and there.”

7. World Opportunities for Organic Farms

“Global opportunities on organic farms tend to be more relaxed labor in exchange for housing only with the expectation that you are just visiting, but many community supported farming type farms offer shared housing to make up for lower pay and long working hours” , one answered.

8. American Consulting Association

“Try camp counseling (ACA has an amazing job listing) for housing work. My sister worked at a boarding school, which also provided housing,” added another.

“Along the coast of the United States, outdoor schools typically operate year-round three to five days a week with no break for children and supervision. It’s a great job for an energetic 20 year old and you save more because you spend most of your time in a place where you can’t spend money.”

9. Film crew of the Summer Stock Theater

Someone volunteered: “Most Summer Stock Theater productions offer housing with work. This is usually a three to four month contract aimed at young industry players. This is an accident with the quality of pay / work / etc.

There are some horror stories, but there are also outstanding opportunities. Offstagejobs.com is listing production jobs and most summer promotions will begin posting within a month.”

10. Caring for a companion

Finally, someone said, “Companion care. You live with an elderly or disabled person. You cook meals, do light housework, take them to meetings, etc. No CNA required. They have stricter background checks.”
