In defense of the HOA: 10 good deeds of the HOA that do not deserve your hatred

When buying a home, you need to consider whether it has a Home Owners Association (HOA). HOA fees are additional costs that you must pay, usually on a monthly basis, in addition to your mortgage. HOAs usually have a bad reputation, but we have found some people who really appreciate their HOAs. According to a popular internet forum, here are ten reasons why people genuinely love their HOA.

1. Maintenance of common areas

Areas that have HOAs often have common areas. Common areas can be as small as a patch of grass with a bench, or as large as a field where residents can play sports. The upkeep of these common areas is entirely covered by the fees paid by the residents, which means they can use them without being the one who maintains them.

2. Maintains high real estate values

HOA statutes often require houses and yards to look a certain way. Although it may be annoying at first, it is a way to ensure that the area is beautiful and well maintained, to keep demand high and to increase property values.

3. No lawn care

This does not apply to all HOAs, but sometimes they include lawn care. Not having to go outside in the summer heat and mow your lawn is often more than worth the HOA fees you pay. The same goes for snow removal in winter, depending on where you live.

4. Insurance included

Insurance is another perk that may be included in some homeowners associations. Although this is not usually home insurance, it can be additional services such as earthquake insurance. This will save you money and ensure that you are covered in the event of a natural disaster.

5. Utilities included

It’s rare for an HOA to cover all utilities, but it’s not uncommon for things like garbage collection, water, and sewer to be included in your fees. Of course, you pay HOA fees to cover this, but these are additional costs that you won’t need to budget for either. Often, some HOAs provide high-speed Internet access, which is a big plus.

6. Pool/Spa without service

There is nothing better than swimming in the pool on a hot day. But pools are expensive. Many costs are associated with them, including water and heat. Pools also need to be renewed every five to seven years, which is expensive. This cost will be covered by the HOA so that you can use the pool at any time.

7. Gym Maintenance

Speaking of expenses, gym memberships can also cost a lot of money. Some areas with HOAs have a gym, which means they are responsible for maintaining the equipment. One of the best things about having an HOA with a gym is that you don’t have to travel far home to shower after your workout.

8. Beautiful area

This is the most talked about reason people love their HOAs because they make the neighborhood look beautiful. Not to mention that it drives up property values, it’s nice to enjoy walking around and knowing you won’t be looking at an eyesore. Residents will have to live by the statute, which means that their lawn will be in good condition and they will not have cars parked on their grass. It’s nice to be able to be proud of where you live.

9. Included amenities

Most HOAs offer a variety of amenities, especially those that cost a bit more. One commenter explains, “We have three swimming pools, two lakes, a sewerage station, a cabin, and a gated driveway. All are in good condition and a pleasure to use. Homeowners’ association is strictly open. It’s basically like a small decently run city, but without that kind of bureaucracy.”

10. Neighborhood Events

The icing on the cake is that the HOA often organizes events in the neighborhood. This is a great way to meet those who live near you and have fun. One person claims that their HOA hosts events such as the annual Easter egg hunt and the 5,000-strong turkey lynx. This topic inspired me to write this post.
