I love useless information. While trite to some, nuggets of nonsensical statistics, percentages, and myth-busting explanations provide hours of hilarious conversation—especially over beers with friends. Online discussion shares some interesting trivia for your next beer night.
1. Crown shyness
Some species of trees avoid touching each other, leaving aesthetically pleasing borders between the canopy of leaves above the forest. “One theory suggests that the leaves of a tree can sense when they are approaching another tree,” explains the arborist. “As soon as they sense a neighbor approaching, the growth process stops, ensuring that light can enter the foliage and photosynthesis can continue.” Wonderful.
2. Related talent
“Creator Johnny Bravocreator Cool girlsand creator Dexter’s Laboratory everyone was roommates in college,” says the commentator. He adds another childhood TV revelation to showcase his superior knowledge: “SpongeBob SquarePants, the Powerpuff Girls Mayor, and Carl from Johnny Bravo are all voiced by the same person: Tom Kenny.” This guy knows his kids TV!
3. Why are flamingos pink?
“Flamingos are pink because they eat shrimp or, in some species, algae,” says the next poster. “To keep flamingos pink, zookeepers put another chemical in their food. Otherwise they would be white.” I live near a colony of these amazing creatures and I will add that older birds are pinker due to their longer exposure to pink crustaceans.
4. Hierarchy of tank guns
A military expert explains the appearance of the tanks used as demonstration vehicles. “If the barrel of a tank is held high, then (tank) participated in the war and won, but now (decommissioned).” He explains that the gun pointing down means that the enemy captured the tank and then rescued it; a straight barrel means that the tank operated in peacetime.
5. Air curtains
Another commenter shares another useless but fascinating fact. When you enter the store, you feel a downward push of air, known as an air curtain, “which acts as a barrier to prevent the cold air inside the store from escaping.” In addition, this air curtain protects the store from insects.
6. Leather dust
Hygiene freaks better turn their backs now. “Your dead skin makes up most of the dust in your home,” someone shares. I am now indignant, given the dust that collects in my apartment! I’ve always assumed it’s because we often keep the windows open – time to splurge on moisturizer.
7. Rhyme schemes
Lexicologists and word lovers now have a new tidbit of information to play with. “Not a single word in the English language rhymes with the words “silver”, “month”, “orange” and “purple,” the author of the words shares. I’m still trying to come up with a rhyme for orange!
8. Wait, isn’t that called Lint?
“The substance that accumulates over time at the bottom of pockets or cuffs of trousers is called gnurr,” says an Indian businessman. She admits that this is her “most useless” fact. “I don’t think I’ll ever call it gnurr in practical life!”
9. Turn you over for it!
“If you toss a penny 10,000 times, it won’t be 5,000 times,” declares the statistician, “but rather 4,950 times, because the picture of the head weighs more and therefore ends up at the bottom.” So, if you have to do 10,000 coin flips a day, be careful!
10. At least it wasn’t Comic Sans!
As a result of the Panama Papers scandal, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was arrested and imprisoned for corruption and forgery. “One of the reasons was that the Sharif family used the Calibri typeface to forge documents,” explains the Pakistani, “which were dated before the typeface was available to the public.” How this did the guy make it to the top?
