Baby Boomers have a bad reputation in popular culture, often seen as aging weirdos who often yell at American youth to get off their lawns. However, despite the fact that Millennials and Generation Zers refuse to admit it, Boomers are right in many ways. People of all ages recently met on an online forum to discuss this topic, and what they shared might surprise you!
1. People are too loud
You know? Boomers are right: people are too loud. From people chatting on their cell phones in public, to gym goers playing music so loud you can hear it even if they’re wearing headphones, to people streaming their daily lives online, boomers are right here.
2. Physical buttons are better
As cars become more technologically advanced, the simple physical button is becoming a thing of the past. However, there’s something to be said for the tactile feel of a real button, knob or slider when you’re driving – the physical controls mean you won’t have to take your eyes off the road thanks to muscle memory. when you adjust the volume of the music (which is way too loud, by the way).
3. Paper menus are better than QR code menus
While the pandemic has forever changed many aspects of eating out, just about anyone can agree with boomers that physical paper menus are better than having to onerously scan a QR code to see just how overpriced a “New American” menu is on your local restaurant. Just give me a paper menu that I can use as a giant food napkin, and let me have a $9 beer in peace, please.
4. Automated customer service is the worst
If you find yourself calling the company’s customer service hotline and talking to a real person, then I need to know how the hell you managed to build a time machine in 1995. Boomers nailed it – it shouldn’t be a lesson in patience to ask a simple question to a living, breathing customer service rep.
5. Stop recording fireworks
One particular boomer (or perhaps a boomer-in-training) has some strong words about people who bizarrely record fireworks on their cell phones. “The worst ones are people who record things like fireworks,” the person says. “You are missing the point and you will never watch this video again.” God bless him; people need to remember to live in the moment!
6. Headlights are too bright now
My dad haunts the topic that inspired this post? Wow, that’s like saying “my dad”. But, I must admit, he was not mistaken. The LED headlights in new cars and trucks are too bright, and I wish I wasn’t blinded for three seconds every time I drive past a Ford Z-150 Raptor Big Boy Look-At-Me truck.
7. Connected devices are stupid
Just because we’re living in 2023 doesn’t mean every appliance in our home has to be smart. Sometimes the simpler the better with many things, like kitchen appliances. “Why do I need a toaster that needs to connect to the Internet?” complains one baby boomer. “So that I can link it to my Facebook account and let everyone know that my preferred toast settings are “a little closer to three than two, but still not in between those two”? Smart devices are stupid.”
8. A watch should be a watch
There are over 216 million smartwatch users worldwide, which many baby boomers say is too many for the roughly 216 million smartwatch users. People lived in a time when watches kept track of time, no more, no less – without the ability to spy on you. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?
9. Let me own things
Video streaming services and the copyright protection that accompanies them ushered in a new era of subscription-based entertainment, which means that while you pay for a movie or TV show, you don’t own a copy of it. Many boomers would like to see society go back to the days of physical media so they can take pride in physically owning a copy of something.
10. Don’t Overdo Youth Sports
Countless users agree with one woman who thinks parents are overcompensating by enrolling their kids in too many sports leagues. “Just because your kids are in every sports league and traveling all over the place spending tons of money and time doesn’t make you a better parent,” she says. (She’s probably just frustrated by the unbearable volume of the radio in the car while driving to and from games.)
