Premium credit cards often offer a wide range of benefits. From travel credit to lounge access to high reward rates, there are many benefits that make these cards attractive to the consumer.
However, there are also benefits that are not given as much attention, but they can save the cardholder a lot of money and nerves.
Purchase protection is one such benefit. It provides you with coverage in the event of theft, damage, or loss of an item you purchased with a qualifying Chase card. Read on to find out how Chase Purchase Protection works and when you can use it.
Purchase Protection
Chase offers purchase protection on all of its credit cards. This benefit provides coverage for items purchased with a Chase card in the event of theft or accidental damage for up to 120 days from the date of purchase. The issuer may refund you, send you a replacement, or offer you a repair, depending on the decision of the benefit administrator.
Please note that purchase insurance is secondary coverage and only takes effect when your primary insurance, such as homeowner’s insurance, has been exhausted.
As you can see from the table below, Chase can refund you up to $500 or $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account, depending on which card you have.

How to File a Purchase Protection Claim
To file a claim, call 1-888-320-9961 or fill it out online. Chase requires you to begin the registration process within 90 days of loss, damage, or theft. Also, if your item has been stolen, you need to file a police report within 48 hours.
After you contact Chase, the benefits administrator will send you a claim form, which you will need to complete and submit, along with all supporting documents, within 120 days of the loss.
Return Protection
If you want to return an item but the store won’t accept it back, you’re in luck if you paid for it with your Chase Sapphire Reserve or United Club Infinite card.
These two Chase cards are the only issuer cards to offer return protection. This benefit applies to items within 90 days of purchase, up to $500 per item and $1,000 per year.
Please make sure your item is insured before filing a claim. You may find coverage exceptions in your card’s terms and conditions. For example, Chase’s return protection does not cover medical equipment, jewelry, and seasonal items such as holiday decor.
How to file a return protection claim
You may file a claim within 90 days of purchase online or by calling 1-800-874-7702. After you contact Chase, the benefit administrator will send you a claim form. Submit the completed form with supporting documentation within 30 days of starting the process.
Please note that if you file a claim within 30 days of purchase, Chase may require you to provide proof of the store’s return policy. You will also need to return the item in new or good working condition to the benefit administrator.
Extended Warranty
If an item purchased with a Chase card is warranted for three years or less, it may be covered by an extended warranty. The Chase Extended Warranty increases the original manufacturer’s warranty by one year, to $10,000 for a claim and $50,000 for an account.
This benefit applies to most Chase consumer credit cards and all business cards.
How to apply for an extended warranty
Apply by calling 1-800-874-7702 or visit cardbenefitservices.com. You must begin the registration process within 90 days of the product failure and submit the completed claim form and supporting documentation within 120 days.
After the privilege administrator reviews and approves your claim, you will either have the item repaired or you will receive a replacement.
What is not covered by Chase Purchase Protection?
Purchase protection is a Chase cardholder’s privilege, but it’s important to know the applicable terms and conditions before expecting a refund. Chase does not offer an exhaustive list of all exclusions, but does provide a few examples of purchases that are not covered by purchase protection.
Items not covered include:
- Items that “mysteriously disappear without any evidence of wrongdoing”
- Used or used items
- Antiques and collectibles
- Boats, cars, airplanes and any other motorized vehicles
- Software
- Items purchased for resale, professional or commercial use
It’s also important to remember that items that qualify for purchase protection are subject to both time and cost restrictions. Pursuit protection applies to lost or damaged items for 120 days from the date of purchase. Depending on which Chase card you have, you can apply for between $500 and $10,000 per application, up to a maximum of $50,000 per year.
