Recently, a man we’ll call Reval shared on an online forum that he bought his first home a few years ago. It was a mid-sized house in a southern state with a Home Owners Association (HOA).

He chose the area because of low HOA fees, minimal regulations, and affordability. However, a few weeks later, Revel received a notification from the HOA about two violations.
Stupid Violations
The first violation was that the lawn should be greener, and the second was that the garbage cans were too close to the driveway. This confused Revel, since the first violation was in the middle of winter, and everyone’s lawn was dead. As for the second accusation, Revel kept his trash cans on the side of their house, and they were probably sticking out on one leg when the HOA arrived.
$200 fine
A month later, he received a hundred dollar fine for each violation. There was no point in this, and Revel was not going to distribute money just like that. He went to appeal and met with an older guy who looked to be in his seventies.
After explaining his case, the man said, “You should be fined for this. Young people like you who don’t care about their homes is the only reason I got on this board. Learn to be a better property owner.”

When the meeting started, the moderator said that they would vote for three of the five board members. Revel saw an opportunity and took it by nominating himself. He made a fake speech about his passion for community service and how HOA is not here to make money.
Revel won by a wide margin, to the displeasure of the other board members. He appealed his violations, and the one concerning the garbage cans was cancelled. The board claimed that weeds grew in his yard, so he had to pay a hundred dollars.
Become a secretary
Revel was appointed secretary after joining the board. His role was to take notes of meetings and review reports. He could vote for new laws from the vice president or president, but he was not allowed to propose new policies. He planned to find out how things worked and get all the other members off the board.

The first revelation came when the president proposed fining her neighbors who didn’t have neutral colors. Reval created a Slack message thread to see what other members think about it.
He then posted a thread on the main channel saying how wrong her actions were and that she should be removed from the presidency. The four members agreed to this as she used her power for personal gain. Her tearful story about how the board became her life didn’t save her.
Next Objectives: Director and Treasurer
The next targets were the director and treasurer. Revel created an account on Nextdoor and waited for the board to roll out letters of infringement. He then sent messages to all the recipients and told them that the treasurer and director were behind this and they should come to the next HOA meeting to appeal.
More than fifty people came to fry two. The Vice President (now President) tried to protect them, but failed. Revel advised them to resign, which they did. They were replaced by a couple who were present at the meeting.
final reckoning
The president was still the same angry and hateful man, and Revel had no way to kick him out. He won the gold after realizing he owed the board about ten thousand dollars in unpaid breach fines. They changed the management company; the previous one hid this as he had been on the board of directors for seven years.
The HOA’s charter states that they can start foreclosing real estate that is over $3,000 in debt. Revel collected all the necessary documents and called an emergency meeting of the board.
Final result
The president flew out of the meeting and resigned a few days later. He paid what he owed and put his house up for sale. Revel became president and reduced the fine to four hundred dollars. Homeowners can digitally appeal and there will be no weed fines until May. Trash can laws have also been relaxed.
Revel says the moral of the story is that if you fine him two hundred dollars and call him a stupid boy, you will lose your home. What do you think of this shallow plan in action?
