From Reagan to Biden: Should Presidents Resign at 65?

Some people think that age is just a number, while others swear that a certain amount of maturity comes with age. A user on an internet forum asked others if they would support limiting the president’s age to 65. That’s what they said. What do you think?

In 2016, Donald Trump became the oldest incumbent president. He became president at the age of 70. This record was quickly broken in 2020 when Joe Biden was elected at the age of 77.

The recent increase in the age of incumbent presidents has sparked debate over whether there should be an age limit for assuming the office of commander in chief.

Age is not a problem

The first one says that old presidents are not the US problem. They think that the problem is in the non-democratic system. Senior presidents are just a symptom of this. It would be useful if the system were more democratic and fair.

While there is nothing wrong with having a senior leader, having a decrepit and dysfunctional spokesperson is a problem. You can be old and mentally capable.

Age matters

However, another person argues that in addition to mental fitness, age should be limited. We should only select candidates who will spend several years in the world they are shaping.

As long as they are still involved in life

Some agree that they don’t mind boomers as long as they are firmly on their feet in everyday life. Unfortunately, these are always independent wealthy boomers who never worried about anything. Another person says the solution is to introduce more rules about how much money candidates can use to campaign. All parties in the presidential race must receive an equal and reasonable amount for spending.

There is no magic formula

One person says that there is no formula that would make people care about the world. They encourage people to wonder if any decent person they know would stop caring for their children when they find out they are going to die next year. Will they stop wanting to make the world a better place for their child just because they won’t be around?

If we replace the entire convention with a bunch of twenty-five year olds and give them a magic potion that allows them to live to 100, will they make the world a better place?

Old people are out of touch

Seniors out of touch? One suggests that they would rather have a thirty year old millionaire who knows how the Internet works than an eighty year old millionaire who doesn’t know how to use e-mail.

They recognize that understanding how technology works is a great decision-making tool. Their company has replaced a 70-year-old CEO with a 48-year-old. Even though they don’t identify with him, he has a better understanding of the problems in their company. The change is massive.

Experience blocking age restrictions

Do you think that the introduction of age limits will eliminate people who have dedicated their lives to public service? According to one of them, we often underestimate the importance of experience and wisdom in leadership. For example, Nelson Mandela became president at the age of 75. They also had elderly professors with a wealth of knowledge and sympathy. While most political contenders do not fit into this narrative, it is essential to give the older generation a chance.

Cognitive exams can help

One American says they don’t care about age, only cognitive ability. They think that many people are over sixty-five but still smart. The system can conduct psychological tests to confirm this. Unfortunately, there is a possibility of corruption. People should be able to vote for whoever they choose. Candidates must also make the right decision and resign if they are mentally unstable.

Congress is the problem

The problem starts with Congress and then with the president, one person suggests. They propose setting age limits for all who are appointed or elected. The age limit of seventy makes sense.

While this may seem like a pipe dream, time limits can help; for Congress (two years, limited to four to five terms), Supreme Court (five years, maximum three terms), and Presidency (limited to two terms, every four years). This would put an end to government with dynasties of inertia.

Ageism is unacceptable

Another participant adds that if we want to improve the policy, the solution is to illegally accept money at special interest. They support the adoption of laws that ensure transparency of political beliefs, goals and financial investments of politicians.

Political leaders must report to their constituents every six months or annually and give an overview of their achievements. Supporting ageism is not progressive.

We exist in different worlds

Finally, someone says they support age limits for generational reasons. Elderly people lived a completely different life. Being twenty-six today is different than it was in 1960.

It’s shocking when some leaders say they worked part-time at McDonald’s, making two dollars an hour when they were in college. This salary could afford them an education and a home. Purchasing power has declined over the years, so we need leaders who understand the world’s current problems.
