10 Jobs That Were Romanticized But Really Sucked: “Long, Thankless Hours”

Some of the most prominent positions may seem rewarding and fulfilling, but what about the downside? A recent social media post illustrates how some people feel about lying. Unfortunately, not all careers are what you imagine as a child. Here is a list of professions where the truth is hidden from public opinion.

1. Veterinarian

Many mistakenly believe that if you love animals, being a veterinarian will be a rewarding experience. Instead, listing the horrific events is all one writer wants to share to wake people up to the fact that veterinary medicine isn’t just about saving puppies. “I sent animals home with invasive cancer because the families couldn’t afford the treatment,” says one beleaguered veterinarian.

2. Spy

James Bond is the glamorous face of espionage, especially when he gets to try out M’s new gadgets. However, according to one former spy, being a spy is “very boring and lonely.” “You keep a low profile for the local ‘job’ you’ve been given and write reports at night. For years.”

3. Architect

Those with any idea of beautiful architects working in high-tech offices and designing iconic, luxurious structures will be disappointed. Architecture is very competitive, and someone working in the field says that most architects end up designing “warehouses, Walmarts, and malls.”

4. Rescuer

From what some people are posting, there is a shortage of trained lifeguards today. “Hey dude, you wanna be responsible for a bunch of lives for minimum wage in the hot sun?” one beachgoer warns. “You’ll also be mistaken for a nanny, ridiculed for trying to create a safe environment, and forced to work shifts with unreliable colleagues.” Baywatch, that’s not true.

5. Computer game tester

As cool as it sounds, developing games for software companies involves head-butting heads with ignorant executives, sacrificing creativity, and burning out. One independent game developer warns: “There is a 95% chance that the work (in which) you have put your soul into it over the past three years will simply be forgotten in a week because it has not gained popularity.”

6. Public school teacher

Not surprisingly, almost 10% of teachers drop out after their first year. This reality is summarized in the comment: “Fantasy: I am going to change the world one student at a time. Reality: A poorly paid zoo.”

7. Dolphin Trainer

Anyone who has seen Bay or Blackfish knows that dolphin training is conducted with gritty realism, especially with regard to the mental health of mammals. A friend in the industry says that only “5% of their day” is spent swimming or doing tricks. Instead, most of the time is related to “butchering fish, (doing) medical checkups and other things.”

8. Crew member

“Long, thankless hours” is the description in this thread. The film industry is all about glamour, especially on the red carpet. In fact, infiltrating a film crew means you’re on call all day and replaced if you’re unavailable. Another crew veteran agrees that while they are bored, “12- to 16-hour workdays, seven days a week for several months” can take a toll.

9. Farmer

Jeremy Clarkson’s brilliant television series Clarkson’s Farm is about a brutal case involving attempts to turn land into profit. As environmental regulations become more stringent every year, there is an increasing need to keep cattle healthy. One farmer tells us, “You have many days that go by quickly and easily, and then you get into an emergency that makes three hours feel like a week.” It can be a high paying job without a degree, but it’s not as easy as it sounds.

10. IT Security Executive

I don’t think this job title sounds glamorous, but there are millions of young people who will. However, the IT specialist agrees with him. “This is not a fight against hackers,” he warns. “It’s a bunch of checklists and hours of meetings on the verge of becoming an argument.”
